Chinese Americans - The Most Litigious and Civil disobedient Americans
David Y. Lei was born in Taiwan and immigrated to the United States in 1956. He began his career in the late 1960s as a social worker in San Francisco’s Chinatown. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley he entered business, founding an export company serving Mexico, and retired after selling the firm in 2003. Mr. Lei has held numerous leadership roles, including Vice Chair of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, Director of the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade, Treasurer of the Friends of the Bancroft Library, Vice Chair of the Center for Asian American Media, and Chair of the Chinese Performing Arts Foundation. He currently chairs the Collections and Program Committees of the Chinese Historical Society of America and lectures widely on Chinese American history and culture.
Abstract
Following the passage of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, the 105,000 Chinese living in the United States filed more than 10,000 lawsuits against the federal government.
Their relentless pursuit of justice helped shape the civil rights and immigrant rights protections that all Americans benefit from today.

Abstract
June Xu, artist, curator, and founder of the Asian American Art & Culture Initiative (AAACI), advances narrative change by transforming overlooked histories into accessible, community-centered art. Her flagship project Roots Unveiled: Chinese American History 1783–1945 uses archival research, oral histories, and multimedia exhibitions to reposition Chinese-Texan stories within the broader American narrative
On this panel, she will discuss her practice-based approach to narrative change—combining ethical oral-history gathering, cross-sector partnerships, and multi-format storytelling designed for intergenerational audiences. Drawing on her work across exhibitions, films, and community workshops, Xu argues that true narrative change requires building cultural infrastructure and community ownership. She will share practical strategies for coalition-building and sustaining long-term visibility for marginalized histories.

Abstract
The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 marked a new era in Artificial Intelligence, unleashing a global wave of AI infrastructure expansion. As AI computation scales at an unprecedented pace, a new class of AI Data Centers (AIDCs) is emerging—facilities characterized by ultra-high power density, fluctuating real-time load profiles, and 24/7 mission-critical operations.
This evolution is redefining the relationship between digital infrastructure and the power grid. Traditional grid planning and backup systems are being challenged by AI’s unique power behavior—rapid ramp-up and ramp-down cycles, multi-megawatt load steps, and the increasing need for power quality and stability at the millisecond level. As AI adoption accelerates, energy reliability, flexibility, and sustainability will become the core metrics of competitiveness for data-center operators and utilities alike.
In this keynote, I will explore how these new dynamics are reshaping global energy demand and grid architecture, and how advanced battery and energy-storage systems (UPS + ESS) are emerging as foundational technologies to meet this challenge. From AI load smoothing and fast-response support to peak-load management and renewable integration, battery storage is evolving from a backup component into a strategic enabler of the AI-driven energy ecosystem.

AI, Explained: For People Who Have Other Jobs

His research interests lie at the intersection of data management, natural language processing, machine learning, and data mining, with applications in computational journalism, smart agriculture, health informatics, and transportation systems. Dr. Li received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2007, and his M.E. and B.S. degrees in Computer Science from Nanjing University in 2000 and 1997, respectively.
Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) can feel like a black box, but the core idea is simple: we show computers lots of examples so they can spot patterns and make useful guesses. Those guesses can be numbers (a forecast), labels (spam or not), or---more recently---creative outputs like text and images. This talk offers a friendly tour of how modern AI learned to do these things, why recent advances in data, fast chips, and better algorithms made a difference, and how that led to tools like ChatGPT. We’ll look at what AI is good at today, where it falls short, and what "using it responsibly" means. We’ll also unpack common concerns in plain terms: confident mistakes (“hallucinations”), bias, privacy, and the challenge of explaining decisions. You’ll come away with a clearer mental model of how AI works and what questions to ask when considering its use.
